Daniel Budgell
Founder - Global Peace Network
Daniel founded Global Peace Network as a result of a project that took him to Tanzania. He spent 3 months working with the Rural Communities Heath Project run by Langara College. Daniels initial project in Tanzania was to build a sustainable rain water collection system along with volunteering at an orphanage. His friendliness and natural curiosity led Dan to get to know a group of street children. After talking to them he realized that education was the one thing they wanted above everything else. Global Peace Network started with the simple intention of sending just a few kids to school and has since grown to what it is today. It is his sincerity and enthusiasm that has attracted many people to join Dan in his quest to help the less fortunate.
Daniel is currently working on his Biology degree at the University of British Columbia and hopes to go on to do a Masters in Malariology.
Global Peace Network started in the summer of 2005 after I returned to Canada from an aid project in Tanzania. Although my actual work had nothing to do with street children, I did spend a considerable amount of time with street kids, and orphans. Since then I have traveled around the world and met many children in orphanages and on the streets. It's amazing how resilient some kids are. The stories that they told me, the suffering they've experienced and the spark that they still had in their smiles were truly inspiring.
Comments from Dan:
I've always wanted to help children, but never quite got around to it for many reasons. For example, how do you know where your money goes after you donate? Does it go to overhead costs, or to the actual people who need it? That's why I decided to start an organization that was very personal and transparent. Initially all I wanted to do was put a couple of kids in school on my own, but since it went so well and the kids were happy I decided to keep going.
Eventually this led me to incorporate my group of friends and myself as Global Peace Network. I'm truly proud that we use no money on administration or overhead costs. All donations go directly to the people in need. To do this our organization needed unique help. GiveMeaning issues tax receipts on our behalf, User Experience Without Borders runs our website for free, and countless other people give us their time and expertise to make this happen. I'm genuinely proud to be the leader of a group of inspired & compassionate people who work together to achieve a common goal; to help one person after the other, and make the world a bit better for everyone.
